Choosing an AI course

AI courses UK

AI courses UK learners can choose from run from free government-backed introductions and university short courses to apprenticeships, public open courses and training run inside one company.

This guide sets out each route, who it suits, what to check before booking and which funding is genuinely available today, so an individual or an employer can pick a sensible starting point. It does not rank providers.

Choose the route that fits your goal, your starting point and the tools you will actually use at work.

Choosing an AI course

what routes do AI courses UK learners have?

There are five main routes: free introductions, university short courses, apprenticeships, public open courses and in-company training.

AI courses UK providers offer differ less by subject than by who sets the content. A free introduction is written for anyone; a university short course follows an academic syllabus; an apprenticeship follows a national occupational standard; a public open course follows the provider's timetable; and in-company training follows one organisation's tools, data rules and work.

Most people searching for AI training courses want one of two things: a personal introduction to what AI can do, or practical skills for a job they already have. The first is well served by free and open material. The second depends on the tools your employer has approved, which a general course cannot know.

Keep a clear distinction between courses that teach people to use AI tools and courses that teach people to build or train AI models. Workplace courses on assistants, prompting and review need no programming. Machine learning courses do, and they are a different career route.

  1. Decide whether you want an introduction or job skills.

  2. Separate using AI from building AI.

  3. Pick the route before comparing providers.

Choosing an AI course

are the free government AI courses worth taking?

Yes as a foundation: AI Skills Boost offers free, benchmarked courses to every UK adult, but they cannot teach your employer's rules.

In January 2026 the government said that every adult in the UK is eligible to take free, newly benchmarked AI courses through AI Skills Boost, a government and industry programme aiming to upskill 10 million workers by 2030. The same announcement says people who complete the short courses receive digital badges.

The AI Skills Boost explainer names the 11 industry partners delivering courses, including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, IBM and Salesforce, and reports 1,001,147 completions since June 2025 from partner data. That measures reach, not what people now do differently at work.

Among AI courses UK adults can take for nothing, these are a sensible first step, especially for people who have not used an AI assistant before. Our guide to UK government AI training covers the public-sector offer in more detail, and AI training for beginners explains what a first course should teach.

what do university and open short courses offer?

They give structured, independent learning on AI concepts, ethics and strategy, at a set pace and often with a certificate of participation.

The Open University's OpenLearn AI Hub, run with Microsoft, lists free courses from introductory AI fluency to responsible use of generative AI. Its introduction to artificial intelligence covers the historical, ethical and social issues and offers a free statement of participation on completion.

Universities and business schools also run paid short and executive courses on AI strategy and leadership. These suit people who want a broader view of the technology or a credential from a known institution. Check what is assessed, whether the certificate is credit-bearing and how current the material is before paying.

Public open courses from training companies sit between the two: fixed dates, a mixed group and a general syllabus. They work well for one or two people from an organisation. For several people using the same tools, an AI leadership course or team format is usually a better fit.

A working checklist for this decision
CheckWhat to establish
1Check what is assessed.
2Ask whether a certificate carries credit.
3Check when the material was last updated.

Choosing an AI course

can an apprenticeship be one of the AI courses UK employers fund?

Yes, for technical roles: apprenticeships combine paid work with training towards a national standard, such as machine learning engineer.

On GOV.UK, apprenticeships are open to people aged 16 or over who are not in full-time or part-time education, and you can start one even if you already hold a degree. You work, get paid and train towards a qualification. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own application routes.

Skills England publishes the machine learning engineer standard (ST1398), a level 6 apprenticeship approved for delivery from December 2024. A revised assessment plan replaces the current one for new starts from 11 December 2026, so check which version a provider is quoting.

Of all AI courses UK employers can fund, an apprenticeship is the longest: a programme for someone building or maintaining AI systems. It is not the right route for a team that simply needs to use an AI assistant well next month.

what funding exists for AI courses UK learners and employers?

Free routes exist; the dedicated SME AI upskilling grant is closed, so check any funding claim against GOV.UK before relying on it.

The government's AI Upskilling fund pilot is closed to applications. It offered small and medium-sized professional business services firms up to 50% of the cost of AI skills training, and the application window closed on 18 August 2024. Treat any provider still advertising that match funding with caution.

In England, Skills Bootcamps are free courses for adults, typically lasting up to 16 weeks and procured through local areas; digital subjects are included. Availability and eligibility vary by area, so check with your local authority or combined authority.

For AI courses UK learners take today, the free AI Skills Boost courses and apprenticeship funding are the current routes we could verify. We do not quote prices for paid courses here; ask each provider for a dated quote.

  1. AI Upskilling fund: closed since August 2024.

  2. Skills Bootcamps: free, local, eligibility varies.

  3. Get paid course prices in writing.

Choosing an AI course

what should you check before booking an AI course?

Check who the course is for, what you will practise, how data is handled and whether any accreditation claim is real.

Start with the outcome: what will you be able to do afterwards, and how will that be shown? Practical exercises on realistic tasks are a better sign than hours of video. If a course claims accreditation, confirm it with the accrediting body.

Employers should check that the content matches the tools staff are allowed to use and reflects UK data rules, as set out in the ICO guidance on AI and data protection. The government's AI skills tools package maps skills by job level and can help you decide which roles need which training.

For staff with no AI experience, AI literacy training covers capabilities, limits and safe use before any tool-specific course. Every one of the AI courses UK buyers compare should be judged the same way: by what learners can do afterwards.

  1. Ask for the learning outcome in writing.

  2. Verify accreditation directly.

  3. Match the course to approved tools and data rules.

Choosing an AI course

when is in-company training a better route than AI courses UK providers sell publicly?

When several people use the same tools and need to apply them to the same work under the same rules.

Public AI training courses teach a tool in general, and most AI courses UK providers sell are built that way. In-company training teaches the job done with the tool: your approved assistant, your data policy, your review standard and tasks taken from your own work. That is the route described in AI training courses UK, predeploy's in-company course options.

It suits teams rather than individuals. For a whole workforce, AI training for employees covers foundations and safe use; the AI training hub covers workshops, programmes and training alongside a build. predeploy trains people to use AI, not models, does not sell individual places and claims no accreditation.

If you are an individual, start with the free routes above. If you are choosing for a team, contact predeploy and we will scope training around the work before you commit.

  1. Teams with shared tools and rules.

  2. Exercises from real work.

  3. Individuals: start with free routes.

Make the decision concrete

What does the current task cost in time?

Choose a task connected to ai courses uk and enter its current workload. This gives you a baseline to discuss before buying training or commissioning a build.

A baseline is useful even if you decide to keep the process manual. Measure the work that matters, then compare quality and review effort as well as time.

Assess the workflow before changing it, or plan business AI training if the gap is how people use existing tools.

Your current workload

People × minutes × weekly tasks ÷ 60. A workload baseline from your inputs, not a prediction of AI time savings. Include review and support time when comparing a proposed workflow.

A useful AI investment leaves your team able to do the work and judge the result.

FAQ

Questions, answered

No. predeploy trains teams inside organisations, so individuals are better served by the free and open courses described on this page.

Not for courses on using AI tools at work. Coding matters for courses and apprenticeships on building AI systems, such as machine learning engineering.

The dedicated AI Upskilling fund pilot closed on 18 August 2024. Free AI Skills Boost courses, Skills Bootcamps in England and apprenticeship funding are the current routes we could verify.
